Driving Green

The push lately is for green redevelopment — builders are tearing down older buildings and replacing them with structures that don’t use materials that are harmful to the environment, and are as energy efficient as possible.

I can’t help but think, in the midst of this green trend, of a documentary I saw not too long ago called Who Killed the Electric Car?  It is about the electric cars that were produced more than ten years ago, and then quietly rounded up and destroyed — ostensibly when the oil companies made a fuss.

Many opponents of electric cars quite happily point out that there is no way the power companies in America — which burn coal, by the way, making the cars not really pollution-free — could never support the demand for electricity if everyone drove electric cars.  However, they forget that we have a very real, completely green source of power at hand: solar power.

Of course, solar electric probably won’t be able to provide all the power for a household with two or more electric cars, but at least it could cancel out the extra power drawn by these cars, making us at the very worst no worse off than we were before.  Just think if the people in that documentary also all had California solar systems, and were able to make up for the difference in their electricity usage by basically making their own!

The fact that this hasn’t happened yet ought to show that the green living trend going on right now is really only the tip of the iceberg, the beginning of what needs to be done in order for us to truly reduce our carbon footprints and live in harmony with this earth!
