Stop Saving Stuff for “Someday”

I am in the process of trying to simplify my life. One of the things that this process includes is getting rid of all of the stuff around my home that I don’t need anymore. The problem that I keep running into is a common one; I always think that I might possibly need things “someday” so I keep on saving them in case that day ever comes around.
I’m working on getting out of this habit. I mean, sure, I might use that commercial Christmas tree and those vintage Christmas lights again one day even though I’ve traveled back to my hometown every Christmas for the past five years and never needed to decorate. But do I really need to keep them around my house just because there might be a need for them someday? I am starting to think that it’s time to get rid of things like these.
I’m going by the 2 season / 2 year rule for getting rid of things. This rule states that if you haven’t used something in two seasons (unless it’s a seasonal item and then you extend that to two years) then you need to get rid of it. By this rule, I’ve been able to get rid of a lot of those things I’ve been storing for “someday” and am freeing up space in my home.

The two year rule is a good one for clearing out stuff that you rarely/never use. Don’t clutter up your life with all that stuff.
Americans have too much stuff. Be ruthless and clean out your attic or garage except for all of the stuff that you absolutely need.
I’m someone who’s a confirmed packrat and let me tell you, that it can be really tough to throw things out. Whenever I do it, I think, Darn, I’m going to need that someday.
The more junk you have packed away, the bigger the yard sale you can have. My advice is, just get rid of everything that you don’t absolutely need and make yourself some spare cash.
If you think you have too much junk packed away. You probably do. Clear out your storage space and donate what you unearth to charity. More Americans need to do this, especially in hard times like we’re currently going through.
I agree with this blogger here. If you haven’t used something like a tool or a long extension cord in a long time, say two or three years, maybe it’s time to get rid of it. People save too much useless crap anyway.
Don’t keep too much useless junk around. If you haven’t used it in a while and you can’t think of a current use for something, then get rid of it.
Before you start throwing out everything in your storage shed, you need to have your friends come over and look over what you’ve got. They can make your clean-up job a lot easier by carting some of your junk away for you. Why work harder than you have to?
