Definition of Energy

There are three main types of energy, fossil fuel, nuclear, and renewable.  Now that populations have grown due to increased longevity and advancements in medicine, society has used more fossil fuels than we should have, and nuclear is still somewhat in the scientific stage.  This means we are out of balance and that is why we are shifting to the renewable sources of energy.

There are multiple sources of renewable energy; hydroelectric, biomass, solar, wind, and geothermal.  Ironically, many of these renewable sources are fuels or energies we used long ago.  For example, the windmill was once used to generate power and is now being looked at again as a reasonable energy source.  Part of the challenge with renewable sources of energy is regulating the energy that is administered.  However, environmental engineers have created several tools to help calibrate the outcome.  For example, water flow measurement can be achieved with a flow meter.  Also, use of air or steam can be monitored with devices such as a mass air flow sensor.  With the assistance of these kinds of tools the energy can be maximized and loss minimized.

We may not see all energy sources transfer to a renewable source; however, even small global differences have been known to make a dramatic impact.
