Guess I Can’t Do Freelance Writing From Everywhere

I always tell people that my favorite part about being a freelance writer is that I can work from anywhere. I love the freedom of being able to take vacations whenever I want. Sure, these are working vacations but I still get to see new places even while I work.

The problem is that it’s turned out not to actually be true that I can work from everywhere. There have turned out to be a lot of places that didn’t have Internet access so I couldn’t actually submit a lot of my online work. And there have been places where I couldn’t do the work that I needed to do because some websites were blocked.

For example, I spent some time last summer in a small town in Ohio where I was visiting relatives. The only place where I could get an Internet connection was in the local library. I went there when I arrived so that I could work on some Tampa search engine optimization articles that a client needed me to do. The problem was that I had to do some research on topics that were considered “adult” and the library blocked access to the sites that I needed.

I decided to try to work on another project for the same client. He needed me to help with some social networking campaigns in Tampa. I had been thrilled that I could do this work in Ohio thanks to the Internet. I was disappointed to find out that the library there also blocked me from social networking sites. I couldn’t do any of the work that I needed to do.

I ended up resolving the problems fairly easy. One of my relatives had a computer that I could use while I was there so it ended up being fine. Still, it made me realize that maybe I can’t do my work from just anywhere. And it made me think twice about taking off to a foreign country if I have work that’s due!
