I Proved Them All Wrong!
When I was a kid, pretty much all I wanted to do was be a writer. I remember telling my guidance counselor this and being told quite sternly to take the career aptitude test anyway. Because it was that big a deal if I read for half an hour while everyone else took the test? Or because they didn’t like my answer? I don’t know.
Unfortunately, such tactics worked, and for a long time I believed my dream was unattainable. It wasn’t until I went back to college four years later that I finally started moving back in the direction of wanting to be a writer again. And now here I am, a published, moderately successful freelance writer. I showed them, didn’t I!
The funny thing is, they always said I’d need a "day job," but in some ways I have more financial freedom now than I ever did as a captive employee. See, my income is directly related to how much I work. I can work more and make more, or work less and make less (but have more time to myself).
I love being self-employed, so much so that I’ve started other businesses of sorts in the past. For instance, my mom and I looked into starting an eBay business together at one point to buy and sell dolls (which we collect and therefore know a good deal about). There are also a lot of franchise opportunities available for those who want a little more security and a little less creative control in their business — which isn’t me, but everyone is different!
