Employee Involvement in Incentive Programs

Incentives are a part of everyday life.  Parents use incentives with their children, teachers with their students, and companies with their employees.  One way to get your workers to concentrate on safety is to start safety incentive programs.  Try to make your programs reward employees for positive behaviors.  This will reduce the tendency to for workers to under report accidents and injuries.  Use incentives to motivate your workers to attend safety meetings and workshops and to make their own safety suggestions.

When implementing a safety incentive program into your company, do not use a one-fits-all mentality.  Customize the incentive programs to fit with your company and your employees.  Modifying the program to mesh with the environment of your workplace is the key to making the program successful.  Not every employee will be motivated by the same rewards.  Talk to your workers and find out what is important to them and what they want to work toward.

Getting your employees involved in the implementation of the rewards program will help motivate them and make them feel that their ideas and opinions are valued.  Get your employees involved by asking them to set safety goals.  Put these goals in writing and do regular employee reviews to discuss how these goals are being met.  When an employee meets a set goal, reward them immediately.  You may even want to consider rewarding workers for reporting accidents so that making incident reports does not become perceived as doing something negative.

My mom would always use incentives with me. She would let me have a ‘mom-daughter day’ where just her and I would hang out without my dad and brother. I loved it!

Instead of focusing on the negatives it is good to make the employee incentive program centered around positive behavior. Employees don’t like to feel like they are being scolded, it really lowers morale.

Having a variety of rewards available does ensure that most employees will find something that will make them happy and motivated to work towards being safer. Getting choices is important.

Safety goals and recognizing when an employ meets those goals is crucial towards keeping a safety incentive program a big hit in the workplace. Also making sure that the program stays up to date will keep employees interested.
