Doing Inventory
Since it is almost our year end, I have been spending a couple of nights this week doing inventory at our shop. Since we sell boat parts, there are thousands of items to catalog, which usually takes an entire week. Though I don’t love doing inventory, it is something that needs to be done.
In the past we closed the shop for an entire day, and all the staff came in to work on inventory. It went very well and made my job a lot easier.
But just three years ago, we had a big fiasco on inventory day thanks to a couple of staff members that didn’t take the job seriously. In fact, it ended in complete disaster when everything had to be recounted because the numbers just didn’t make sense.
Though I did have some suspicions as to who the problem staff were at the time, I made an executive decision to do it myself and make sure it is done right. Maybe at some point when those unnamed employees quit I will start trusting the staff again, but in the meantime it is up to me to get the counts done.
I am just happy we do it only once per year – it is a lot of work!
